Service Sunday – Apple Edition

This Sunday is our Service Sunday for October, and we’re trying something new! It’ll be a Service Sunday in two parts. The High School and Middle School Youth Groups will meet in Thaxter Hall at 9:30am to go apple-picking. We’ll return to Thaxter Hall by 11:30am and are inviting anyone 3rd grade and up to help us make apple pies that we’ll send to Cross Roads (and maybe Gather if we make enough). Please join us!

Mission Trip Presentation

Sunday, October 13th, 11:15am

The SJC youth who went on a mission trip to North Carolina this summer will talk about their experiences and present what they learned during their week with the Episcopal Farmworker Ministry. This presentation is part of the ongoing “Out of the Box” series that highlights ways members of SJC and others are living out their faith beyond the walls of the church.

Youth Mission Trip

Commit to Serve!

JUNE 23-29, 2019

Nathan and Ashley are eagerly awaiting commitments from members of the middle school and high school youth group for our MISSION TRIP!!! We cannot wait to serve with this crew and dive into deepening our spiritual connection with ourselves and each other.

We are hoping to collect a $75 deposit for each student by Sunday March 10. Its time to decide to make a difference in your life and in this world!

FAQ’s about the mission trip:

Where are we going?

Dunn, NC, a rural, agricultural community on the Coastal Plain of Eastern NC.

What are we doing?

Working with the Episcopal Farm Workers Ministry and the Trinity Center on the Outer Banks.

But what are we going to DO there?

We’ll do some farm work and some projects to support the community of farmworkers. We will hear stories from migrant workers and open up our hearts and minds to a greater human experience.

Who is going on the trip?

Definitely Ashley Wade and Nathan Bourne. We hope to bring a group of ten students – there are still several spots available!

What students are eligible to go?

All rising 7th-12th graders.

How much does it cost?

The ticket price per student is about $750, but we will be fundraising and assistance is available. As with all programs at St. John’s, money shouldn’t be a deciding factor for your family! Do know that each student will be responsible for helping with fundraising efforts for our group.

How are we getting there?

We’re taking the St. John’s van. It’s about a 14 hour drive and we’re planning on doing it in a day.

Where are we staying?

For the first five nights we’ll stay at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Clinton, NC. They’ve offered for us to take over a couple Sunday School rooms and their parish hall. Our last two nights we’ll be at The Trinity Center on the Outer Banks.

How do I sign up?

Email Nathan (curate@stjohnsnh.org) ASAP and bring in your $75 deposit on Sunday March 10th.

Pageant Sunday

Pageant 2018 drawing
Drawing by Finn Moore, grade 6.

This Sunday is our annual Christmas Pageant! That means there will not be any Sunday School classes – all children who are NOT participating in the pageant should go to church for the 10:00 service. Arrive a little early for a good seat to see everything! The nursery will remain open for our youngest.

If your child would *like* to participate but has not been involved in rehearsals, you can still show up! We try to make it easy to jump in as a sheep or an angel. There’s a dress rehearsal on Saturday which you are welcome to attend, or you can just come and make yourself known on Sunday morning in Thaxter Hall. Kids will be arriving btw 9-9:15 to get into costume. Let me know if you have any questions: ashley@stjohnsnh.org

Teenagers and big kids – we need your help too! We need banner bearers to walk the big banners down the aisle and helpers with the night sky… Nathan and Lizzie are good contacts for those jobs 🙂

Our upcoming Sunday schedule will look as follows:

  • Dec 23 – Pageant (No classes, nursery open)
  • Dec 30 – No Children/Youth Programs (Nursery closed)
  • Jan 6 – Sunday School and Youth Groups resume at 9:30AM

A friendly reminder that our musical rehearsals will being on Sunday Jan 6th. This year we are doing Willy Wonka – performance will be Feb 16 & 17. If you’re interested in learning more about this, let me know!

Youth Halloween Party

RSVP to Nathan!

Halloween 2018

After Youth Choir Rehearsal (4-5:30), we invite youth group members (6th and up + all junior choir members) to join us in the Philbrick Room for a festive costume party! Our group will attend the Portsmouth Parade at 7:00PM and we will provide transportation!

PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WANT A RIDE HOME FOR YOUR CHILD/REN.

We will need a headcount to coordinate this – your response is appreciated. $10 per child.
